Knowledge Discovery Database (KDD)-Data Mining Application in Transportation

In this paper, an understanding and a review of data mining (DM) development and its applications in logistics and specifically transportation are highlighted. Even though data mining has been successful in becoming a major component of various business processes and applications, the benefits and real-world expectations are very important to consider. It is also surprising to note that very little is known to date about the usefulness of applying data mining in transport related research. From the literature, the frameworks for carrying out knowledge discovery and data mining have been revised over the years to meet the business expectations. In this paper, we apply CRISP-DM for formulating effective tire maintenance strategy within the context of a Malaysian's logistics company. The results of applying CRISP-DM for tire maintenance decisions are presented and discussed.

Design and Development of Gas Leakage Monitoring System Using Arduino and ZigBee

Gas leakage in industrial area causes many health issues. Thus, to prevent such disasters happen, the atmosphere of a workplace should be regularly monitored and controlled, in order to maintain the clean air environment. However, efforts in industrial air quality control have been impeded by the lack of science-based approaches to identify and assess atmosphere air quality and level of dangerous gas. Therefore, a monitoring system for gas leakage detection needs to be developed. For the development of this system, the combustible gas sensor (MQ9) was used in order to detect the present of methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide gas (CO). This sensor will detect the concentration of the gas according to the voltage output of sensor and operated in the alarm system, autonomous control system and monitoring system by using Arduino uno as the microcontroller for the whole system. Whereas the Zigbee will send the data reading from the gas sensor to monitoring system that display on LabVIEW Graphical User Interface (GUI). Besides, user can take immediate action upon the leakage occurs, else the gas supply and the system will shut down automatically within 10 minutes to prevent the condition becoming worst.

Simulation Study of Item Validity Testing and Item Discrimination Index

In psychology or educational research, we often want to test the validity of our instrument. Usually we use the Pearson coefficient of correlation in validity testing. However, the distribution of the data are not always normal distribution so it is also possible to use the Spearman and Kendall coefficient of correlation to test the validity of items. Valid items tend to have a positive and significant coefficient of correlation. It means the item is likely to be answered correctly by people who have a high total score and tend to be answered incorrectly by people who have a low total score. Item discrimination index is an index that measures the ability of item to be able to discriminate students who have high learning outcomes and students who have low learning outcomes. Simulation studies provide a clearer description and show that the item discrimination index has a significant relationship to validity testing that is commonly used in research.
