Effect of Wheat Biscuit on The Prevention of Vomitting in Early Pregnant Women

Background: Vomiting during pregnancy is a common occurrence, with as many as 60-70% of pregnant women experiencing vomiting as an unpleasant symptom of morning sickness. Vomiting during pregnancy if left untreated may becomesevere. The impact is decreased fluid and body electrolyte, blood circulation inhibition, and eventually disrupted growth of the fetus. An empty stomach can cause nausea. Wheat biscuit intake may have an effect on the prevention of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. Digestive biscuits that are made from whole grain or whole wheat are good as a snack as they have a lot of dietary fibre. This dietary fibre helps regularize bowel movement and clear up constipation. Since constipation is a major side effect of pregnancy consuming these biscuits may actually help pregnant women. This study aimed to determine the effect of wheat biscuit on the prevention of vomiting during early pregnancy. Subjects and Method: This was a quasi experiment with one group pre and post design. The study was conducted at Mojoroto, Sukarame, Kediri, East Java. A sample of 12 pregnant women of first trimester with vomiting was selected for this study. The dependent variable was vomiting frequency. The independent variable was wheat biscuit intake. The data were collected by questionnaire. The match data were analyzed by Mc Nemar test. Results: Before intervention, 6 (50%) ofpregnant women had moderate vomiting and 6 (50%) had mild vomiting. After intervention, 1 (8%) ofpregnant women had moderate vomiting, 2 (17%) had mild vomiting, and 9 (75%) had no vomiting. Conclusion: Wheat biscuit seems beneficial to prevent vomiting during pregnancy. More studies with randomized control trial with a large sample are suggested to provide stronger evidence. The Effectiveness of Hugging in Reducing Depression and the Feeling of Powerlessness in the Affected Adolescents

Background: Hug therapy, or hugging therapy, is using hugs to provide emotional comfort and healing. Recent studies have found that the simple act of hugging can help people who suffer from stress, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The benefits of hugging come from the power of touch. The reason for this is oxytocin, a hormone that brain naturally releases into the system whenever the affected engages in hugging, cuddling, or physical intimacy. The study proved that oxytocin helped people overcome social rejection. One of the studies on the effects of this “cuddle hormone” was published in the medical journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. Little is known on the effect of hugging on depression and feeling of powerlessness in an Indonesian population. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of hugging in reducing depression and the feeling of powerlessness in the affected adolescents. Subjects and Method: This was a randomized control trial involving 20 adolescents affected with depression and feeling of powerlessness. This sample was taken from out-patients visiting Atmahusada Mahakam Mental Hospital, Samarinda, East Kalimantan. As many as 10 subjects in the experimental group received hug therapy, and 10 subjects in the control group received no hug therapy. The dependent variables were depression and feeling of powerlessness. The independent variable was hug therapy. Depression was measured by Beck depression inventory (BDI). Feeling of powerlessness was measured by Beck’s Hopelessness Scale (BHS). The difference in the proportion of the affected subjects after the intervention was analyzed by Chi square. Results: After the intervention, the proportion of the depressed subjects in the hug therapy group were 7 (70%) and in the control group were 9 (90%) with p=0.265. Likewise, after the intervention, the proportion of subjects with the feeling of powerlessness in the hug therapy group were 8 (80%) and in the control group were 9 (90%) with p=0.531. Conclusion: Hug therapy alone is not effective to reduce depression and feeling of powerlessness in the affected adolescents. Keywords: depression, powerlessness, hug therapy, adolescents

Effect of Hospital Accreditation on Patient Safety Culture and Satisfaction: A Systematic Review

Background: Hospital accreditation is carried out to improve the quality of hospital services and patient safety. This study aimed to statistically review the effect of hospital accreditation on patient safety culture and satisfaction. Subjects and Methods: A systematic review was conducted through articles searching. Four electronic databases namely PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and EBSCO were used in this study. The keywords were “hospital accreditation”, “patient safety culture”, “patient satisfaction”, “improving”, and “impact”. The inclusion criteria in this study were articles in the span of ten years of publication, and using English. The articles were selected by PRISMA flow diagram. Results: Ten journal reported that accreditation had a significant influence on patient safety culture. There was difference in patient satisfaction among accredited and non-accredited hospitals, but it was not statistically significant. Two articles mentioned that patient satisfaction was driven by hospital physical facilities. Patient safety culture after hospital accreditation was associated with commitment and support from all hospital staff and leadership. Service quality and patient satisfaction were associated with ongoing evaluation of the accreditation implementation. Conclusion: Hospital accreditation has an effect on patient safety culture and satisfaction. Improving patient safety culture after hospital accreditation requires commitment and support from al hospital staff and leadership. Ongoing evaluation of the accreditation implementation needs to be carried out to improve service quality and patient satisfaction.
