Online Gaming: Impact on the Academic Performance and Social Behavior of the Students in Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School

This study was conducted to assess and find out the impact of on-line gaming on the academic performance and social behavior of the students in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Laboratory High School. Furthermore, this study sought answers on the significant relationship between playing on-line games and academic performance and to social behavior of the students. The study revealed that boys are more of a player compared to girls who often play games that require three or more players like League of Legends, Clash of Clans, Crossfire and many more to mention. It is also stated that those who play online games are around 14-15 years old who are believed to be in the Grade 8 level. These students who often play games have an average weekly allowance of 101 pesos to 500 pesos. Playing online games do not affect their grades badly for they know how to limit themselves. They know that they need to control themselves in order to function well in their class that is why they only play games during vacation and weekends with a lot of time compared when they have classes. Even though they play online games; they know how to socialize well and they can perform very well when it comes to academic performance. However, it is inevitable not to play even for half an hour especially when they are accustomed to it. Therefore, it is just a matter of discipline. Integrating Gender and Development (GAD) in the Classroom: the Case of Lucsuhin National High School, Department of Education-Philippines

The integration of gender-sensitive teaching strategy remains to be a challenge among educators. This social issue requires more in-depth exploration especially in the classroom to promote its significance and determine its applicability and effectiveness. This study aimed to apply the Gender and Development (GAD) approach in teaching Filipino Literature among Grade 8 learners. It specifically employed gender-based differentiated instruction (GBDI). GBDI pertains to a teaching approach where the teacher assigns group to students based on their gender, multiple intelligences and learning style. Quasi-experimental research design was used to assess the academic performance of the students while correlated t-test for the comparison of the pre-test and posttest result of the students. This study revealed that there is an increase in the pre-test scores when the students were exposed to the gender-sensitive teaching approach. The learners are also encouraged based onthe interviews and observation conducted. The study suggests the gender-responsive teaching approach be integrated in the classroom to promote gender equality and contribute to the improvement of learner's academic performance. The Collapsing Dayaknese Totem: Palm Oil Plantation and the Waning of Religiosity in West Kalimantan

For the Dayak Desa people of Kampong Nek Gambang, tapang madu (Koompassia excelsa) is believed as their totem rather than just a bee tree. Being a totem, tapang madu underwent three cultural modifications: social, religious, and psychological. In religious function, tapang madu is considered as the main media for Desa's initiation ritual, as well as having vital position in their myth of origin. In its social function, tapang madu is also a statement of clanship, serving as a family tree which records up to nine late generations of ancestors. Relating to its social function, the tapang produces honey which is invaluable to the Dayak Desa. In its psychological function, tapang madu is protected by a collapsing-taboo. Nevertheless, research shows that even though it is considered sacred, tapang madu totem has been massively demolished by external groups and even the people of Nek Gambang themselves. This ethnographic research is aimed to understand the reason for the fall of tapang madu totem both physically as well as symbolically.   Keywords: Collapsing, Dayak Desa, Honey, Palm Oil Tree, Tapang Madu, Totem
